I am pleased to send this message of felicitation on the occasion of the 27th General Conference of the World Fellowship of Buddhists (WFB) held at Baoji, Beijing, China. This is the first time that the WFB holds its general conference in China.
This is an occasion of special significance to Sri Lanka as the WFB was founded in May 25 B.E.2493 (1950) in Sri Lanka, then known as Ceylon by representatives from 27 nations and famous Sri Lankan Pali and Buddhist scholar, Dr Gunapala P Malalasekera was elected its first President.
I am happy to note that the WFB is growing stronger each year and 300 Buddhist delegates are scheduled to participate at the Baoji Conference.
The Lord Buddha said: Quote”
“Uttitthe nappamajjeyya - dhammam sucaritam care
Dhammacari sukham seti - asmim loke paramhi ca”
(Loka Vagga - Dhammapadaya)
Be alert; do not idle. Follow the low of virtue. He who is
virtuous lives happily both in this world and in the
next.” unquate
The teachings of the Buddha is of extreme relevance to conflict ridden world today and I am confident that the Conference will not only help Chinese Buddhists to strengthen ties with the WFB and Buddhists worldwide but also contribute to the world peace.
It is my earnest wish that the blessings of the Noble Triple Gem will be with the World Fellowship of Buddhists to continue its meritorious services.
